Memoria

More than seven centuries ago a man called Mastino founded the lordship of the Scaligeri. Today his name lights up the evenings of Piazza Erbe.

The story of the name

Mastino della Scala,
the first of the Scaligeri

His name was Leonardino della Scala, but Verona remembers him as Mastino. With him the city became the Verona of the Scaligeri, who ruled it until 1387. And Piazza delle Erbe, the ancient Roman forum, still bears their signature.

  1. Captain of the people

Already podestà since 1259, Mastino I della Scala becomes capitano del popolo: the lordship of the Scaligeri over Verona begins.

  2. The Volto Barbaro

On 26 October Mastino is murdered in the vaulted passage between Piazza Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. A plaque still remembers him, a few steps from here.

  3. The Casa dei Mercanti

His brother and successor, Alberto I, rebuilds the Domus Mercatorum in stone; it still overlooks the square.

  4. Mastino II

Under Mastino II the Scaliger dominion reaches as far as Brescia, Parma and Lucca. His tomb, with its equestrian statue, stands among the Scaliger Tombs, a short walk from the square.

  5. The Madonna Verona fountain

Cansignorio, son of Mastino II, builds the fountain in the middle of the square, crowned by a Roman statue. In 1370 he adds the Torre del Gardello, whose clock struck the hours over the square.

  6. Il Mastino Bistrot

At number 24, facing the fountain: the name of a lord of Verona, the loyalty of a mastiff and a table from which to look out on seven centuries of history.
